Honor Our Living Donors Act
Summary
The Honor Our Living Donors Act would modify how the Living Organ Donation Reimbursement Program determines eligibility for reimbursing living organ donors. Currently, the program considers the organ recipient's income when deciding whether a donor qualifies for reimbursement of expenses like travel costs. This bill would eliminate that income-based restriction, allowing donors to receive reimbursement regardless of how much money the recipient earns. The bill would also permit donors to be reimbursed even if the recipient cannot or does not pay them back for their expenses.
Additionally, the bill would require the Department of Health and Human Services to assess whether the reimbursement program adequately covers organ donors' actual expenses and, if not, determine how much additional funding would be needed. If enacted, these changes could make it easier for living organ donors to recover costs associated with their donation, potentially removing financial barriers that might discourage people from becoming donors.
