Air Guard STATUS Act of 2025
Summary
The Air Guard STATUS Act of 2025 aims to create a permanent federal tuition assistance program for members of the Air National Guard. Currently, while Army National Guard members have long-standing access to federal tuition assistance, Air National Guard members have primarily relied on limited pilot programs or state-specific benefits. This legislation would require the Secretary of the Air Force to provide consistent financial support for the educational expenses of "drill status" guardsmen nationwide.
Under the proposal, the federal government would pay all or a portion of the tuition and related charges at educational institutions for eligible members. To remain eligible for these benefits, guardsmen would be required to stay in compliance with their military training obligations, including attending required drills and field exercises. By standardizing these benefits across service branches, the bill seeks to improve recruitment and retention within the Air National Guard.
If enacted, the bill would provide a more reliable and permanent source of funding for Air National Guard members pursuing higher education. This would reduce the financial burden on citizen-airmen and ensure they receive educational benefits equal to those of their counterparts in the Army National Guard and active-duty military components.
