PFAS Research and Development Reauthorization Act of 2025
Summary
H.R. 6667 would reauthorize the Environmental Protection Agency's research and development authority for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS or forever chemicals. PFAS are synthetic chemicals found in many consumer and industrial products that can contaminate drinking water and the environment. If enacted, this bill would extend EPA's research authority through the end of fiscal year 2029, allowing the agency to continue studying how to measure PFAS in air and water, understand health impacts from PFAS exposure, and develop technologies to remove PFAS contamination.
The bill is currently under consideration in the House Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment. EPA's previous PFAS research authority expired at the end of fiscal year 2024, making this reauthorization necessary for the agency to maintain its ongoing research programs. The legislation has bipartisan support and would help ensure continued scientific work on addressing forever chemicals that may affect drinking water supplies and public health.
