Magnus White and Safe Streets for Everyone Act of 2026

The Magnus White and Safe Streets for Everyone Act would amend federal motor vehicle safety standards to improve automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems in cars. Specifically, the bill would require the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to update current AEB standards so that these crash avoidance systems can detect cyclists and other vulnerable road users more effectively, regardless of their clothing color or skin tone, in both daytime and nighttime conditions. The bill would apply these enhanced detection requirements at the speeds that the federal government has already determined are appropriate for existing AEB systems. If enacted, the legislation could help prevent accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians by ensuring that vehicle safety technology works reliably for all road users. The bill is currently under consideration in the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, having advanced from subcommittee markup in February 2026.
