MAILS Act

The MAILS Act would require the U.S. Postal Service to create a formal procedure that allows local government officials to request the establishment of new post offices. Currently, no such standardized process exists. The bill would also change how USPS handles temporary relocations of postal retail services for holidays, special events, and other occasions.

Under this bill, USPS would be prohibited from implementing temporary relocations lasting more than two days without first gathering and considering input from the community. The legislation would also require USPS to notify local officials and the public about planned relocations, provide periodic updates during the relocation period, and hold a public presentation explaining the temporary move. These requirements aim to increase transparency and community involvement in postal service decisions that affect local areas.

The bill is currently in the committee review stage and has not yet been voted on by the full House of Representatives. If enacted, it would give communities greater say in how postal services are managed locally and establish clearer rules for how the Postal Service communicates with the public about service changes.
