MAILS Act

The MAILS Act would establish new requirements for how the U.S. Postal Service interacts with local governments and the public regarding postal services. The bill would require USPS to create a formal process that allows local government officials to request the establishment of new post offices, giving communities a structured way to advocate for postal service expansion.

The bill would also change USPS rules about temporary relocations of postal retail services for holidays, special events, and other occasions. Under this proposal, USPS would be prohibited from implementing any temporary relocation lasting more than two days without first collecting and considering input from the community. Additionally, USPS would be required to notify local officials and the public about such relocations, provide periodic updates, and hold a public presentation about the relocation plans.

Currently in committee consideration, if enacted, this bill would give local communities greater transparency and input into postal service decisions that affect their access to mail services.
