American CANS Act

The American CANS Act would modify existing country-of-origin labeling requirements for canned goods. Currently, foreign products entering the United States must be marked with their country of origin, but the placement and format of this information is not strictly specified for canned goods. This bill would require that country-of-origin labels for any agricultural product packaged in a can either appear prominently on the front label of the can or be stamped, embossed, or printed directly on the top of the can.

If enacted, this legislation would make it easier for consumers to quickly identify where canned agricultural products originate when shopping. The requirement would apply to canned fruits, vegetables, meats, and other agricultural products sold in the United States. The bill is currently in the House and has been referred to committee for consideration, but has not yet been voted on by the full chamber.
