MIND Our Veterans Act of 2025

The MIND Our Veterans Act would require the Department of Defense to improve mental health screening for service members transitioning out of the military. Specifically, the bill would mandate that all mental health screening conducted during separation health assessments use validated screening tools and that substance use screening be included as part of mental health evaluations. The Department of Defense would be required to fully implement these improvements within 120 days of the bill's enactment.

The bill addresses mental health challenges that service members face when leaving military service. By ensuring that transitioning members receive comprehensive and evidence-based mental health screening before separation, the legislation aims to identify mental health and substance use issues early so that veterans can access appropriate care and support as they adjust to civilian life. The bill is currently under consideration by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, following hearings held in March 2026.
