Proprietary Education Oversight Task Force Act
Summary
S. 4056 would create a new Proprietary Education Interagency Oversight Committee composed of officials from multiple federal agencies including the Department of Education, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Department of Justice, and others. This committee would be tasked with improving coordination and enforcement of federal laws regarding for-profit colleges that receive federal student aid.
If enacted, the bill would require the committee to publish annual reports detailing enforcement actions taken against for-profit colleges, including data on student complaints, student outcomes, and executive compensation. The committee would also be required to create a For-Profit College Warning List identifying schools that have engaged in illegal activities or widespread fraudulent or predatory practices. Additionally, the bill would establish a complaint tracking system to make it easier for students and parents to report misconduct at for-profit institutions.
The bill is currently under consideration by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. If passed and signed into law, it would provide prospective students with more transparent information about for-profit colleges' track records and help federal agencies better coordinate oversight efforts to protect students from predatory practices and excessive debt.
