Geo POWER Act
Summary
The Geothermal Power Opportunity With Expanded Regions (Geo POWER) Act aims to accelerate the development of advanced geothermal energy, which uses heat from deep underground to generate constant, carbon-free electricity. The bill proposes creating a "Milestone-Based Geothermal Demonstration Program" within the Department of Energy. This program would provide specialized financial support—such as grants, debt, and insurance—to help companies overcome the high upfront costs and technical risks associated with drilling miles into the earth to reach hot rock formations.
If enacted, the legislation would prioritize projects in regions that currently lack geothermal power plants, including initiatives on or near Tribal lands. To help the broader industry grow, the bill requires participating projects to share data that can help other developers understand new geological areas. By moving beyond small-scale tests to larger projects capable of generating at least 30 megawatts of electricity, the bill seeks to lower energy costs and improve the reliability of the national power grid with a steady source of renewable energy.
