FLAP Reauthorization Act
Summary
The FLAP Reauthorization Act would extend the Federal Lands Access Program, which provides funding for transportation projects on or near federal public lands. The program currently supports roads, bridges, parking areas, and visitor facilities in communities near national forests, parks, and other federal lands. This bill would reauthorize the program through fiscal year 2031 and provide over 1.6 billion dollars in total funding across those five years, with annual funding increasing from approximately 314 million dollars in 2027 to 334 million dollars in 2031.
The bill is a bipartisan effort introduced by Senators Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) and Tim Sheehy (R-Montana). It would not impose new requirements on how the funding is used or restrict what types of projects qualify. For communities near federal lands, the program helps maintain the transportation infrastructure that residents and visitors rely on to access America's public lands. The bill is currently in the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and has not yet been voted on by the full Senate.
