Mark Kelly is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Arizona and a retired astronaut and naval officer who was first elected in a 2020 special election.

Background

Mark Kelly earned a master's degree and graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. He served as a naval aviator and flew 39 combat missions during the Gulf War, eventually logging over 5,000 flight hours and receiving numerous military honors including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. In 1996, he was selected as a NASA Space Shuttle pilot, later commanding two space missions before retiring from the Navy and NASA in 2011.

A member of the Democratic Party, Mark Kelly entered politics after a career as a naval aviator and NASA astronaut.
