Protect Our Letter Carriers Act of 2025
Summary
The Protect Our Letter Carriers Act of 2025 would establish dedicated federal resources to combat crimes targeting the U.S. Postal Service and its employees. The bill would require the Department of Justice to assign an assistant U.S. attorney in each judicial district specifically to investigate and prosecute crimes related to postal services, including assault on postal employees, breaking into post offices, and obstruction of mail delivery.
The bill would also direct the U.S. Sentencing Commission to update sentencing guidelines so that assaults or robberies of postal employees receive the same legal treatment as assaults on law enforcement officers, potentially resulting in harsher penalties. Additionally, the bill would authorize funding for the USPS to install high-security collection boxes and replace traditional mailbox keys with electronic versions to improve security.
Currently in committee consideration, if enacted, this bill would increase federal prosecution capacity for postal-related crimes and potentially increase criminal penalties for those who assault or rob postal workers.
