Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act

S. 512, the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act, would create new federal criminal offenses for operating a motor vehicle within 100 miles of the U.S. border while fleeing from a U.S. Border Patrol agent or other law enforcement officers assisting the Border Patrol. If enacted, the bill would impose criminal penalties including mandatory minimum prison sentences in cases where the offense results in death or serious bodily injury.

The bill would also have immigration consequences for non-U.S. citizens convicted of or admitting to these offenses. Such individuals would become ineligible for immigration relief, including asylum, and could face deportation proceedings. Currently in committee consideration, the bill has not yet been voted on by the full Senate.
