MAPLE Act
Summary
The Making Agricultural Products Locally Essential Act, or MAPLE Act, proposes to expand the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) by adding maple syrup to the list of eligible food items. Currently, this federal program provides low-income seniors with vouchers or coupons that can be used to purchase specific locally-grown products, such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey, at farmers' markets and roadside stands.
If enacted, this legislation would allow participating seniors to use their program benefits to buy maple syrup alongside other fresh produce. This change aims to increase the variety of nutritious, locally-produced foods available to seniors while potentially supporting local maple producers by expanding their customer base. The bill would require the Department of Agriculture to update its program guidelines to include maple syrup as an authorized purchase.
As this is a standard piece of legislation, it would require approval from both the Senate and the House of Representatives and the signature of the President to become law. Because it has only recently been introduced, it must still undergo the committee review process before it can be considered for a final vote.
