Contaminated Wells Relocation Act
Summary
S. 606, the Contaminated Wells Relocation Act, would authorize NASA to enter into an agreement to reimburse the town of Chincoteague, Virginia for costs associated with removing and relocating drinking water wells currently situated on NASA's Wallops Flight Facility property. The wells have tested positive for PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances), contaminants that resulted from firefighting foam use at the facility beginning in the 1970s. NASA currently operates a water treatment system to address PFAS in the affected water supply.
If enacted, any reimbursement agreement would need to include provisions for well removal and relocation, specify where replacement wells would be relocated, and provide cost estimates for the work. The replacement wells would be established on property under the town of Chincoteague's control rather than remaining on NASA property. This bill has been approved by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and is eligible for a floor vote, though it has not yet passed the full Senate or become law.
