IHS Workforce Parity Act of 2025
Summary
The IHS Workforce Parity Act of 2025 would modify how Native American health professionals can satisfy their service commitments under two federal programs: the Indian Health Professions Scholarships and the Indian Health Service Loan Repayment Program. Currently, recipients of these benefits must complete their service obligations through full-time clinical practice. This bill would allow them to fulfill these same obligations through half-time work instead.
If enacted, this change could make these federal programs more accessible and flexible for health professionals serving Native American communities. By permitting part-time service arrangements, the bill may help attract and retain doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals in Indian Health Service positions, potentially addressing workforce shortages in tribal healthcare. The flexibility could also benefit professionals who need to balance clinical work with other responsibilities such as teaching, research, or family obligations.
The bill has passed review by the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and is now eligible for a floor vote in the Senate. It would require presidential signature to become law.
