Veterans Mental Health and Addiction Therapy Quality of Care Act
Summary
S. 702, the Veterans Mental Health and Addiction Therapy Quality of Care Act, would require the Department of Veterans Affairs to contract with an independent organization to conduct a comprehensive study. This study would examine differences in the quality of mental health and addiction therapy services provided by the VA compared to services available from private and other non-VA providers across different treatment approaches.
The bill would require the independent organization to publish its findings publicly, making the results available to veterans, policymakers, and the general public. This transparency could help veterans make informed decisions about where to seek mental health and addiction treatment, and could provide Congress and the VA with data-driven insights into how their mental health services compare to alternatives in the private sector.
The bill has passed committee review and is now eligible for a floor vote in the Senate. If enacted, it would not directly change VA services but would create a foundation for potential future improvements by establishing a clear, objective assessment of how VA mental health and addiction care measures up against other available options.
