Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act of 2025
Summary
S. 761 would create the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies to examine the federal government's historical practice of forcibly removing American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children from their families and placing them in boarding schools. The commission would investigate the lasting impacts and ongoing effects of these policies on Native communities.
If enacted, the commission would develop recommendations in three key areas: protecting unmarked graves at former boarding school sites and associated lands, supporting the repatriation of deceased children and identifying the tribal nations from which they were taken, and preventing state social service departments, foster care agencies, and adoption agencies from removing Native children from their families and tribal communities. This bill has been approved by the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and is eligible for a floor vote, though it has not yet passed Congress.
