Scott, Tim

Tim Scott represents South Carolina's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Born in North Charleston in 1965, he was raised in a single-parent household and overcame early academic struggles with the help of a local mentor. Before entering federal office, he built a career in the private sector as the owner of an insurance agency and a partner in a real estate group. His political career began at the local level, where he served on the Charleston County Council for thirteen years, including several terms as chairman, followed by a tenure in the South Carolina House of Representatives.

In Congress, Scott is a prominent voice on economic policy and financial regulation. He holds a significant leadership role as the Chair of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, and he serves on the Committees on Finance, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. His legislative priorities center on fostering private investment in distressed communities, expanding school choice, and reducing government bureaucracy to encourage job growth.

Scott has sponsored a wide range of legislation, including the Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2024, the PREVENT DIABETES Act, and the High-Quality Charter Schools Act. He is also known for his advocacy of Opportunity Zones, a policy designed to revitalize economically disadvantaged areas through tax incentives.
