Whitehouse, Sheldon

Sheldon Whitehouse has represented Rhode Island in the United States Senate since 2007. Born into a diplomatic family, he spent much of his childhood abroad before earning degrees from Yale University and the University of Virginia School of Law. Before entering the Senate, he built a career in law and public service, serving as a clerk for the West Virginia Supreme Court, a high-ranking official in the Rhode Island Governor's office, and the U.S. Attorney for the District of Rhode Island. He also served as the state's Attorney General from 1999 to 2003.

In the Senate, Whitehouse is recognized for his focus on environmental protection and judicial integrity. He holds several influential committee assignments, including serving as the Chair of the Senate Committee on the Budget and the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control. He is also a senior member of the Judiciary, Finance, and Environment and Public Works committees. Whitehouse is particularly known for his advocacy on climate change, having delivered hundreds of weekly speeches on the Senate floor urging action on the issue. He has sponsored legislation such as the Stop Subsidizing Giant Mergers Act and has been a key figure in bipartisan efforts to reform the criminal justice system and address the opioid crisis. Throughout his tenure, he has balanced a reputation as a staunch progressive with a willingness to collaborate on infrastructure and environmental policy.
