About
Julie Johnson is a U.S. Representative from Texas's 32nd congressional district, having won election in 2024. An attorney by profession, she previously served in the Texas House of Representatives, where she made history as one of Dallas County's first openly gay legislators and the first member of the Texas House with a same-gender spouse. She is the first openly lesbian member of Congress from a Southern state. Johnson's path to Congress followed her 2018 victory over incumbent Republican Matt Rinaldi in her state house race.
In the House, Johnson serves on three committees: Foreign Affairs, House Administration, and Homeland Security. Within these assignments, she participates in subcommittees focused on Europe, South and Central Asia, Elections, Border Security and Enforcement, and Emergency Management and Technology. Her legislative work reflects these priorities, with sponsored bills addressing homeland security funding, voting access through the VOTE Act, military financial literacy, and community health workforce development.
During her time in the Texas House, Johnson demonstrated her commitment to Democratic priorities by participating in the 2021 walkout organized by the Texas House Democratic Caucus, which traveled to Washington D.C. to delay voting on legislation during a special session. This action reflected her willingness to take principled stands on matters she considered significant.
