About
LaMonica McIver represents New Jersey's 10th Congressional District and serves on the House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Committee on Small Business. As a ranking member on the Transportation and Maritime Security Subcommittee and the Economic Growth, Tax, and Capital Access Subcommittee, she leads Democratic opposition on these panels, which oversee critical infrastructure protection, cybersecurity, small business development, and economic policy. Her role as ranking member gives her significant power to shape the minority party's legislative strategy and direct investigations within her subcommittees' jurisdictions.
McIver brings substantial experience in education and community leadership to her committee work. She holds a degree in English Literature from Bloomfield College and a master's degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from Seton Hall University. Before entering Congress, she worked in the education sector, including roles with Newark Public Schools and as Executive Director for Essex Regional Educational Services Commission. In 2012, she founded Newark G.A.L.S., Inc., a nonprofit focused on developing young female leaders, which has impacted over 3,000 young women through its programs.
Since her election to Congress in September 2024, McIver has focused her legislative efforts on issues affecting working families and infrastructure. She has introduced bills addressing transportation equity, immigration security, and support for women workers, including the Parks to People Active Transportation Act, the Protect World Cup Attendees Act, and a resolution recognizing the needs of working women. In May 2025, she conducted an oversight visit to an ICE detention facility in Newark as part of her committee responsibilities, an action that led to federal charges she has disputed as politically motivated.
McIver made history as the first Black woman to represent New Jersey's 10th District and the youngest woman ever elected to Congress from New Jersey. Her political career began at the local level, where she served on the Newark City Council from 2018 to 2024, including three years as council president. She is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Congressional Black Caucus, positioning her within the Democratic Party's progressive wing.
