Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act
Summary
This legislation proposes to update how the U.S. government manages its unofficial relationship with Taiwan. Currently, the State Department is required to conduct a one-time review of its internal rules and guidance concerning Taiwan. This bill would change that into a recurring requirement, mandating a new review and a report to Congress every two years to ensure the guidance remains current.
Under the proposal, these biennial reports would need to explain how the State Department’s policies reflect the fact that Taiwan is a democracy with free and fair elections. Additionally, the reports would be required to identify specific opportunities to remove self-imposed restrictions on how U.S. officials interact with their Taiwanese counterparts. The goal is to ensure that administrative policies do not unnecessarily hinder cooperation between the two partners.
