Women Veterans Cancer Care Coordination Act
Summary
The Women Veterans Cancer Care Coordination Act would require the Department of Veterans Affairs to establish Regional Breast Cancer and Gynecologic Cancer Care Coordinators in each of its regional health care administrative areas. These coordinators would be responsible for ensuring that care is properly coordinated between VA doctors and cancer specialists in the community, helping women veterans navigate their treatment options and receive comprehensive care.
Under the bill, women veterans diagnosed with breast cancer or other gynecologic conditions would be eligible for this care coordination service if they qualify for health care through the Veterans Community Care Program. This would provide an additional layer of support specifically focused on cancer care, addressing a gap in services for women veterans dealing with these serious health conditions.
The bill has already passed the House of Representatives and is currently being reviewed by the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs. If enacted, it would create dedicated positions within the VA system to improve health outcomes for women veterans by streamlining communication between VA facilities and outside cancer care providers, potentially reducing delays and improving the quality of care women veterans receive.
