Saving Our Veterans Lives Act of 2025
Summary
The Saving Our Veterans Lives Act would establish a voluntary program within the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide free firearm lockboxes (or vouchers for them) to eligible veterans and certain former military members. The bill aims to address veteran suicide by making secure firearm storage more accessible. Under the program, veterans could request lockboxes that meet specific safety standards, including being manufactured in the United States and designed to prevent unauthorized access. The VA would also be required to develop educational materials, including an informational video about secure firearm storage as a suicide prevention strategy, and conduct a public education campaign to inform veterans about the program's availability. The bill would clarify that participation does not affect veterans' rights to lawfully own firearms or require firearm registration. If enacted, the program would be funded with $5 million annually from fiscal years 2026 through 2036, and the VA would submit annual reports to Congress detailing implementation and outreach efforts. The bill is currently under committee consideration and has not yet been voted on by the full House.
