Ensuring Casualty Assistance for our Firefighters Act
Summary
H.R. 4671 would direct the Secretary of the Interior to develop a Wildland Fire Management Casualty Assistance Program to provide support to firefighters and their families when firefighters are critically injured, killed, or suffer illness while working on wildland fires. The program would be modeled after existing assistance programs for Forest Service firefighters.
If enacted, the program would potentially include financial assistance for families, travel reimbursement for relatives visiting injured firefighters, case management services, and help navigating federal benefits. The bill recognizes that wildland firefighters face significant occupational hazards and health risks that differ from structural firefighters, and aims to ensure they and their families receive adequate support during emergencies.
The bill has passed committee review and is eligible for a floor vote in the House. This represents a significant step forward, as most bills do not reach this stage of the legislative process.
