Auto Theft Prevention Act

H.R. 568, the Auto Theft Prevention Act, would create a grant program administered by the Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. If enacted, this program would provide federal funding to state and local law enforcement agencies specifically to address auto theft and the trafficking of stolen vehicles.

The bill would also allow existing Community Oriented Policing Services grant funds to be used for these anti-theft efforts. The practical effect, if passed, would be to give police departments additional resources and federal support to investigate and prevent vehicle thefts, which are a significant property crime affecting many communities.
