Pipeline Cybersecurity Preparedness Act
Summary
The Pipeline Cybersecurity Preparedness Act would direct the Department of Energy to create a program focused on strengthening the physical security and cybersecurity of natural gas pipelines, hazardous liquid pipelines, and liquefied natural gas facilities. The bill aims to improve how federal agencies, state governments, and private energy companies work together to protect critical energy infrastructure from cyber and physical threats.
Under the legislation, the Secretary of Energy would develop policies and procedures to enhance coordination among federal agencies, state governments, and industry stakeholders. The program would support efforts to protect pipelines by promoting collaboration through information-sharing bodies that address infrastructure security and resilience. The bill also directs the Department of Energy to coordinate federal, state, and industry response and recovery efforts following cyber or physical incidents affecting the energy sector.
Additionally, the bill would support workforce development by creating training programs related to pipeline cybersecurity and physical security, and would provide technical tools to help pipeline operators assess vulnerabilities and improve their security capabilities. The legislation does not create new regulatory requirements for the energy industry. As of February 2026, the bill has advanced out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is eligible for consideration by the full House.
