Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Education Act
Summary
The Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Education Act would direct the National Science Foundation to award competitive grants to colleges and nonprofit organizations to develop and support high-quality mathematical and statistical modeling education in elementary and secondary schools. These grants would fund research and development projects focused on teaching data science and computational thinking skills to K-12 students. The NSF's authority to make these awards would expire on September 30, 2029.
Additionally, the bill would require the NSF to work with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to conduct a comprehensive study and produce a report on the current state of mathematical and statistical modeling education in American schools. This research would help identify gaps and best practices in how these critical skills are being taught across the country.
If enacted, this bill aims to strengthen math and science education by increasing student exposure to real-world applications of mathematics through modeling and data analysis. The bill is currently in the early stages of the legislative process and has not yet advanced to committee consideration.
