Safe Flights for Passengers and Flight Crews Act
Summary
H.R. 7501 would change how certain passenger charter flights are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. If enacted, the bill would require that starting 90 days after passage, any scheduled charter operation carrying passengers in aircraft with more than 9 passenger seats must comply with the same operational safety regulations that apply to domestic airlines and major commercial carriers under federal aviation rules. This means these charter flights would be subject to stricter oversight and safety requirements currently applied only to larger air services. The bill would automatically implement these new requirements 90 days after enactment, without waiting for the FAA to issue additional regulations. The legislation aims to close what supporters view as a federal loophole that allows some airlines to operate scheduled passenger flights without meeting the same safety standards required of major commercial carriers. The bill is currently referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and has not yet been voted on by the full chamber.
