Momnibus Act
Summary
The Momnibus Act is a comprehensive legislative package consisting of 14 individual bills designed to address the maternal health crisis in the United States. The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate among high-income nations, with significant racial disparities—Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. The bill proposes historic investments to tackle this crisis through multiple approaches.
The legislation would make critical investments in social determinants of health that influence maternal outcomes, including housing, transportation, and nutrition. It would extend WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) eligibility into the postpartum and breastfeeding periods, provide funding to community-based organizations working to improve maternal health outcomes, and increase funding for maternal health programs serving veterans. The bill would also grow and diversify the perinatal healthcare workforce to ensure mothers receive care from culturally competent providers, expand access to maternal mental health and substance use disorder treatment, and improve data collection to better understand causes of maternal health disparities.
