DETECT Nitazenes Act of 2026

H.R. 8022 would direct the Science and Technology Directorate within the Department of Homeland Security to collaborate with the Drug Enforcement Agency to enhance their capacity to detect, identify, and disrupt illicit drugs, particularly nitazenes, even when present in very small amounts. Nitazenes are synthetic opioids that have emerged as a concern in illicit drug markets.

If enacted, this bill would aim to improve law enforcement's ability to intercept and stop the distribution of these dangerous substances before they reach communities. The legislation focuses on developing technological capabilities rather than creating new criminal penalties or enforcement authorities. Currently in the early stages of the legislative process, the bill was introduced in March 2026 and has been referred to committee for consideration.
