Southern Nevada Economic Development and Conservation Act
Summary
S. 1005 proposes to balance conservation and economic development in Southern Nevada by protecting over 2 million acres of federally-owned land in Clark County while allowing controlled development. The bill would set aside land for habitat conservation, outdoor recreation, and cultural preservation, including expansions to Red Rock Canyon and Sloan Canyon National Conservation Areas and wilderness designations for the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Simultaneously, it would allow Clark County to develop approximately 25,000 acres over the next 50 years to support housing construction and economic growth as the region anticipates significant population increases.
The legislation addresses Nevada's housing shortage by making it easier for local governments to partner with affordable housing developers on federal land. The bill was developed with input from conservationists, city and county officials, business leaders, tribal leaders, and recreation interests. If enacted, it would represent Nevada's largest conservation bill while providing the land flexibility that local communities say they need for responsible growth. The bill is currently under committee consideration and has not yet been voted on by the full Senate.
