Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act
Summary
S. 339 would permit Medicare to cover and pay for multi-cancer early detection screening tests beginning in 2028, provided the tests are approved by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services determines coverage is appropriate. These screening tests would detect cancer across multiple cancer types in a single test.
If enacted, coverage would be limited to Medicare beneficiaries under a specified age threshold, starting at age 68 in 2028 and increasing by one year annually thereafter. Beneficiaries would be able to receive one screening test every 11 months. The bill is currently in the committee stage and has not yet been voted on by the full Senate.
For eligible Medicare patients, this could expand access to a newer screening approach that aims to detect multiple cancers early, potentially improving outcomes. However, the actual availability and cost implications would depend on FDA approval of such tests and CMS's coverage determination.
