Caring for All Families Act
Summary
S. 437 would amend the Family and Medical Leave Act to expand the types of family relationships covered under federal leave protections. Currently, the law covers spouses and children, but this bill would extend protections to domestic partners, parents-in-law, adult children, and other related individuals when they have serious health conditions. This would allow more workers to take unpaid, job-protected leave to care for a broader range of family members.
The bill would also create new categories of leave for parents and caregivers. Employees could take additional leave to participate in or attend their children's and grandchildren's educational and extracurricular activities, or to meet routine family medical care needs and care for elderly relatives. These provisions would apply to both private sector and federal employees.
This bill is in its early stages and has not yet been considered by a Senate committee. Most introduced bills do not advance further in the legislative process.
