Protect Medicaid Act
Summary
The Protect Medicaid Act would prevent the federal government from paying states' administrative expenses related to providing Medicaid health benefits to noncitizens who do not qualify for Medicaid due to their immigration status. Currently, some states use their own funds to offer health coverage to immigrants ineligible for federal Medicaid programs. This bill would restrict federal cost-sharing for the administrative overhead of those state-funded programs.
If enacted, this bill could affect how states manage health coverage for immigrants and may influence state decisions about providing such benefits. States that currently offer health programs to ineligible immigrants would need to cover all administrative costs themselves without federal reimbursement. The bill also requires the Department of Health and Human Services to report on which states provide health benefits to immigration-ineligible individuals and related program details.
The bill was introduced in the Senate in February 2025 and is currently under committee consideration. It has not yet been voted on by the full Senate.
