La Paz County Solar Energy and Job Creation Act
Summary
The La Paz County Solar Energy and Job Creation Act proposes the transfer of approximately 3,400 acres of federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management to La Paz County, Arizona. If enacted, the county would be required to pay fair market value for the land. The primary goal of this transfer is to facilitate the development of solar energy projects, which aims to create local jobs and increase renewable energy production in the region. To protect the environment, the Department of the Interior would be required to exclude any land that contains significant wildlife, recreational, or environmental resources from the sale.
The bill also includes specific protections for tribal heritage. As a condition of the land transfer, La Paz County and any future owners would be required to coordinate with the Colorado River Indian Tribes to identify and protect cultural artifacts. This includes making good faith efforts to avoid disturbing tribal sites and allowing tribal representatives to rebury any unearthed artifacts near their original location. Additionally, the land would be withdrawn from future mining and mineral leasing to ensure it remains dedicated to its intended use for energy and economic development.
