Padilla, Alex

Alex Padilla is the senior United States Senator from California, having first entered the chamber in January 2021. He was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to fill the vacancy left by Kamala Harris and subsequently won election to a full term in 2022. Born in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrant parents, Padilla earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before beginning his political career. He previously served as a member of the Los Angeles City Council, where he became the youngest person and first Latino to serve as council president, and later spent two terms in the California State Senate and six years as California's Secretary of State.

In the Senate, Padilla holds several significant committee assignments, including serving as the Ranking Member of the Committee on Rules and Administration and the Subcommittee on Border Security and Immigration. He also serves on the Committees on the Budget, Energy and Natural Resources, Environment and Public Works, and the Judiciary. His policy focus often centers on expanding voting access, addressing climate change, and reforming the immigration system. He has been a vocal advocate for creating pathways to citizenship for essential workers and protecting natural resources through legislation like the Save Our Sequoias Act.

Padilla’s legislative record includes sponsoring the MORE WATER Act and the GROW SMART Act, as well as the Scarper Ridge Golden Gate National Recreation Area Boundary Adjustment Act. Throughout his tenure, he has emphasized environmental protection and infrastructure, serving on subcommittees related to clean air, nuclear safety, and fisheries. As a leader within the Democratic caucus and a prominent voice for the Latino community, he continues to champion progressive policies aimed at economic opportunity and civil rights.
