Organ Donation Referral Improvement Act

The Organ Donation Referral Improvement Act would direct the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation within the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct a comprehensive study on how hospitals use electronic automated referral systems for organ donations. These systems use electronic health records to automatically identify patients who may be suitable organ donors and refer them to organ procurement organizations.

If enacted, the study would examine the benefits of these automated systems, review best practices in their implementation, and develop recommendations for their broader use. The goal would be to potentially improve the organ donation process by making referrals more efficient and systematic. This bill is currently in the early stages of the legislative process and has been referred to committee for consideration.
