Tsunami Warning, Research, and Education Act of 2025

The Tsunami Warning, Research, and Education Act of 2025 would extend federal funding and authority for the tsunami program, which is primarily managed by the National Weather Service under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. If enacted, the bill would strengthen how the government detects, forecasts, and warns the public about tsunamis through improved satellite data integration, better coordination between agencies on earthquake assessments, and updated coastal hazard maps.

The bill would also expand efforts to prepare coastal communities for tsunami threats. This includes requiring regional weather offices to conduct outreach to help residents understand tsunami risks, designating coordinators at tsunami warning centers to work with local partners, and ensuring tsunami alerts reach the public through the national alert system. Additionally, the bill would require the program to develop tools and databases to support tsunami research and issue updated research plans every three years to improve detection and forecasting capabilities.

Currently, the bill is in the early stages of the legislative process, having been referred to a House subcommittee in June 2025. It would need to pass committee review, full House and Senate votes, and receive presidential approval to become law.
