Sickle Cell Disease Comprehensive Care Act
Summary
H.R. 5178 would expand Medicaid programs by allowing states to create coordinated care centers, called health homes, dedicated to treating individuals with sickle cell disease. Currently, states can establish health homes for certain chronic conditions, but this bill would add sickle cell disease to that list. If enacted, these health homes would be required to provide comprehensive services including dental and vision care alongside medical treatment.
The bill would also direct the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to develop best practices guidance for states on how to design and operate these sickle cell disease health homes. This guidance would help ensure consistency and quality across state programs. The practical effect, if passed, would be to give sickle cell disease patients access to more coordinated, comprehensive care through their state Medicaid programs, potentially improving health outcomes by centralizing treatment and preventive services in one location.
The bill is currently in the House and has been referred to committee for consideration. It has not yet been voted on by the full chamber.
