OHH SNAP Act of 2026

This legislation aims to expand access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for college students who are currently facing financial hardship. Under current federal rules, many students are ineligible for food assistance unless they meet specific work requirements or exemptions. This bill would change those rules to allow students with a Student Aid Index (SAI) of zero or less—a metric used to determine a student's ability to pay for college—to qualify for monthly food benefits. If enacted, the bill would simplify the application process for low-income students and help reduce food insecurity on college campuses. By removing certain barriers to entry, the proposal intends to ensure that students who demonstrate the highest level of financial need can afford basic nutritional necessities while pursuing their education. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Agriculture for further consideration.
