PREEMIE Reauthorization Act of 2025
Summary
The PREEMIE Reauthorization Act of 2025 would extend federal funding and programs focused on preterm birth, which occurs when babies are born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. The bill would continue epidemiological studies, data tracking, and prevention efforts conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention related to preterm birth.
If enacted, the bill would require the Department of Health and Human Services to establish an interagency working group to improve coordination across federal agencies and develop recommendations for preventing preterm birth, infant mortality, and related adverse birth outcomes. Additionally, HHS would be required to commission the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to conduct a comprehensive study on preterm birth in the United States and report findings to Congress on financial costs and strategies to reduce preterm birth rates.
Currently, the bill has been introduced in the House and referred to committee for consideration. It has not yet been voted on by the full chamber.
