Modernizing Wildfire Safety and Prevention Act of 2025

The Modernizing Wildfire Safety and Prevention Act of 2025 would modernize how the federal government responds to and prevents wildfires. If enacted, it would expand emergency and disaster assistance by allowing federal aid to cover natural hazards caused by wildfires, such as landslides and floods, for up to three years after a fire. The bill would also require faster payment of certain disaster assistance within 90 days and make wildfire recovery grants more accessible to communities.

The bill would establish new scientific tools to help communities prepare for and respond to wildfires. These include a Joint Office of the Fire Environment Center to provide information for local decision-making, a national system to monitor and alert the public about wildfire smoke, and dynamic risk maps showing wildfire danger. Additionally, the bill would support wildland firefighters through grants for training programs in wildfire management, increased flexibility in retirement benefits, and assistance for families of firefighters who are critically injured or killed.

Currently, the bill is under consideration in the House Subcommittee on Forestry and Horticulture and has not yet been voted on by the full House.
