Lulu’s Law
Summary
Lulu's Law would direct the Federal Communications Commission to issue an order explicitly allowing the transmission of wireless emergency alerts to mobile phones in the event of a shark attack. Currently, authorized government authorities can send wireless emergency alerts for various public safety emergencies, including severe weather, missing children, and other threats to life or property, but shark attacks are not explicitly included in the permitted categories.
If enacted, this bill would add shark attacks to the list of emergencies for which wireless alerts can be issued. This would allow coastal communities and beach areas to quickly notify the public of shark threats through the emergency alert system that reaches mobile phones, potentially enabling faster public warnings and response times during such incidents.
The bill has passed the Senate and is now being considered by the House of Representatives. The practical impact for citizens would be the ability to receive immediate mobile phone notifications about shark attacks in their area, similar to how they currently receive alerts about severe weather or other emergencies. This could provide beachgoers and coastal residents with critical safety information during shark incidents.
