House Committee on Agriculture

The House Committee on Agriculture is a standing committee with broad jurisdiction over federal agriculture policy, food and nutrition programs, rural development, forestry, and conservation. The committee reviews bills related to crop insurance, commodity support, rural electrification, and programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Bills referred to the committee go through a markup process where members debate and amend proposals before voting to send them to the full House for consideration.

Chair Glenn Thompson (R-PA) and Ranking Member Angie Craig (D-MN) lead the 53-member committee, which is organized into seven subcommittees covering areas like commodity markets, digital assets, rural development, conservation, research, biotechnology, forestry, livestock, dairy, poultry, and nutrition. The committee's work is divided among these specialized panels to allow for focused oversight and legislation in each domain.

Recently, the committee advanced the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 in March 2026 with a bipartisan vote of 34 to 17. This comprehensive farm bill addresses commodity support, rural infrastructure, conservation, forestry management, and agricultural research. The committee also considers bills on topics ranging from broadband access in rural areas to agricultural credit programs and food security. Among recent bills referred to the committee are measures addressing broadband deployment, agricultural mental health services, prediction markets, and protein production initiatives.
